Sanggau is the name of a district in West Kalimantan which is located not so far from Pontianak City. Before turning into a district, in the Sanggau area stood a Malay kingdom that had existed since the 4th century AD. The name “Sanggau” itself comes from the name of a plant that grows on the banks of the river where the kingdom was founded, namely the Sekayam River.
